Motivational Monday ~ Don’t Quit

30 Jul

My Dad and Me at a Father-Daughter Dance in High School

My dad gave me this poem in high school. He used to have it taped to his refrigerator in his office. I now have it tucked into the frame of my author-agent contract. 🙂

Don’t Quit

When things go wrong,

As they sometimes will,

When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,

When the funds are low and the debts are high,

And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,

When care is pressing you down a bit–

Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,

As every one of us sometimes learns,

And many a fellow turns about

When he might have won had he stuck it out.

Don’t give up though the pace seems slow–

You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than

It seems to a faint and faltering man;

Often the struggler has given up

When he might have captured the victor’s cup;

And he learned too late when the night came down

How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out–

The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,

And you never can tell how close you are,

It may be near when it seems afar;

So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit

It’s when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit.

Have you ever struggled with something, only to stick with it a little longer and then find great success? I’d love to hear about it.

Motivational Monday ~ The Olympics

23 Jul

We are a few days away from the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics in London. The television set if filled with inspirational ads. The AT&T commercial featuring Ryan Lochte struck me. He narrates the commercial as he dives into the ocean.

Luck doesn’t get you to the Olympic Games.

You can’t wish your way onto the podium.

You can’t buy it or hope for it.

It’s not enough to dream about it.

Luck didn’t get me to London.

I swam here.

How far are you willing to “swim” to reach your dreams? Are you willing to put in the time and the training it takes to actually achieving your goals? I am beyond impressed with Olympic athletes. They work hard for years for perhaps their one and only chance to win an Olympic medal. We usually have more than once chance to reach our dreams. What are you willing to do to make yours come true?

Happy Monday!

Cheers,

Thankful Thursday ~ Week 16

19 Jul

Today I am thankful for:

  • Rain. Yes, we actually got much needed rain today.
  • Too Close to Home is now available for pre-order from both Amazon and Barnes and Noble. When you pre-order a book, it magically appears on your Kindle/Nook on release day. I like to say it’s a gift you give your future self! 🙂
  • Dinner with my family. My family and I went out to dinner. As my children get older, it’s harder and harder to get everyone together. I am so grateful they still want to hang with Mom and Dad.

What are you thankful for this rainy afternoon?

Cheers,

Motivational Monday ~ You create your life through your thoughts

16 Jul

Today’s pearl comes from the wildly popular The Secret by Rhonda Byrne:

What you are thinking now is creating your future life. You create your life with your thoughts. Because you are always thinking, you are always creating. What you think about most or focus on the most, is what will appear in your life.

Like all the laws of nature, there is utter perfection in this law. You create your life. Whatever you sow, your reap! Your thoughts are seeds, and the harvest you reap will depend on the seeds you plant.

If you are complaining, the law of attraction will powerfully bring into your life more situations for you to complain about. If you are listening to someone else complain and focusing on that, sympathizing with them, agreeing with them, in that moment, you are attracting more situations to yourself to complain about.

The law is simply reflecting and giving back to you exactly what you are focusing on with your thoughts. With this powerful knowledge, you can completely change every circumstance and event in your entire life, by changing the way you think.

Another powerful message from The Secret is to focus on what you DO WANT, not on what you DON’T WANT.

Do you believe your thoughts hold this much power over you? I’d love to hear your comments.

Cheers,

Alison Stone

Thankful Thursday ~ Week 15

12 Jul

Today I am thankful for:

  • Reliving childhood memories. How often do we have a chance to go back into time? Well, technically never. However, I took my kids to an amusement park that I frequented as a child. I have vivid memories of riding this very ride ~ the Pirate Ship. Who remembers that one?
  • Sunscreen. I can’t count the number of times I got fried as a kid. I am so grateful today’s sunscreen is so much more effective than the goopy stuff my mom used to slather on me. Since it never worked, she had to then spray me with Solarcaine burn relief. Ah, those were the days.
  • Fried dough. Yum!

What are you thankful for today?

By the way, my second book, Too Close to Home, comes out in 26 days. It is available now on Amazon for preorder. 🙂

Motivational Monday ~ Be the Master of the Lamp

9 Jul

Today’s motivation comes from The Aladdin Factor by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen.

The Seven Characteristics of the Masters of the Lamp. (In other words, people who have mastered asking for and getting what they want.):

1. They know what they want.

2. They believe they are worth receiving it.

3. They believe they can get it.

4. They are passionate about it.

5. They take action in the face of fear.

6. They learn from their experiences.

7. They are persistent.

What do you want this fine Monday morning? More time to write? A beach house? A better job? What steps are you taking to make your dreams come true?

Cheers,

Alison Stone

Thankful Thursday ~ Week 14

5 Jul

Today I am thankful for:

  • Trip to NYC. My two youngest and I spent a long weekend visiting my brother and his family in Brooklyn. We hit the American Girl Doll Store, Coney Island, the aquarium, the merry-g0-round at DUMBO, IKEA, the water park at Red Hook, and the Natural Museum. We really packed it in. I can’t thank my brother and his family enough for being our tour guides. We even had a new adventure taking Amtrak from home into NYC. I highly recommend it!
  • Cover Art for Too Close to Home. I’m totally thrilled with the cover art for my August 7th release, Too Close to Home. Here’s the tagline for my latest romantic suspense: They say you can never go home. If you do, better watch your back.
  • Lazy Days of Summer. Enough said, right?

What are you thankful for today?

Cheers,

Motivational Monday ~ Talent Isn’t Enough

2 Jul

Talent isn’t enough. You need motivation–and persistence, too: what Steinbeck called a blend of faith and arrogance. When you’re young, plain old poverty can be enough, along with an insatiable hunger for recognition. You have to have that feeling of  “I’ll show them.” If you don’t have it, don’t become a writer. ~ Leon Uris
